Cyprus Beaches

Cyprus is renowned for its fine beaches, many of which fly the EU Blue Flag - a demonstration of just how special the beaches on Cyprus really are.

The eastern coast is famous for its fine white sandy beaches with shallow turquoise waters. Deep water bays with rocky outcrops are perfect for snorkelling or diving.

The long finely packed grey sand of the southern coast lend themselves to long winter walks or jogging, while the secluded coves of the western coast beckon when you want to be alone.

Generally, these beaches are quite busy at summer week-ends when the tourist numbers are swollen by local people and expatriates taking the sun and waters. At other times things are much quieter.

Conditions are good for swimmers and variable for water skiers.

Early in the morning or late in the day are usually the best times for calm water.

With a wealth of beaches to choose from, you’re bound to find one that suits your taste.

Blue Flag Beach

Fig Tree Bay (Protaras)

This beach is about 9 miles from the village of Ayia Napa and 33 miles from Larnaca.

Not so many years ago Fig Tree Bay, which is also known as Protaras, was visited only by the local inhabitants however, today it is more widely known by the influx of tourism to the area and has become
One of Cyprus’s best known and most well-liked beaches.

One of the beach’s kentrons. or cafes claims, by signboard, to have on its frontage, The original fig tree — only one of its kind on the island — brought by invaders in the 17th century from the eastern countries’.

With its long stretch of fine, white sand, clean and shallow water, the beach is a favourite with locals over the weekends particularly those with small children, the sea is clear and it is ideal for them to play in the clear shallow waters.

The beach is well equipped with restaurant and water sport facilities like water-skiing, paragliding,
pedaloes, wind surfers, speed boats are for hire. For skiers the choice of boats and skis is perhaps the best of all the beaches and in calm water conditions the runs down the coast are excellent.

Just a short swim away from the beach, there is a small rocky island which many people love to explore, those who are brave enough to venture there should take shoes due to the island being made up of some very sharp rocks however, once you are there the views are simply stunning .

Blue Flag Beach

Nissi Bay (Ayia Napa)

This fine sandy beach is just about 1&1/2 miles west of  Ayia Napa .

Light coloured sand shelves gently into calm clear waters where one can swim, wade, or take a boat to the rocky island just offshore.

The Greek word nisi means island and presumably this is where Nissi is derived from.

Speed boats, pedaloes and wind surfers are for hire.

The beach is well sheltered from the wind and offers a great variety of water sports, cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Water skiers may find the bay a little cramped, but can strike out westwards towards Golden Sands for splendid skiing when conditions are right.

The area is very popular with tourists and islanders alike, and especially so at week-ends in high summer.

You can get to the beach by bus, car, motorbike, bicycle and on foot.

Lifeguards and lifesaving equipment are available from 10.00 to 18.00 hours.

Blue Flag Beach

Makronissos Beach (Ayia Napa)

A cluster of bays form the Makronissos beach, in fact there are three bays that stretch out in different directions, one to the west, the second to the southwest and the third stretches in a south-easterly direction.

All of these bays create wonderfully well sheltered
white sandy beach areas and are most popular with the Cypriots, particularly at the weekends..

The beach itself is approximately 6km out from the local town and is very suitable for families and the elder generation of visitors, offering the chance to experience many water sports. available include snorkelling, diving, water skiing, Para sending and paddle boating.

Lifeguards and lifesaving equipment available from 10.00 to 18.00 hours.

Blue Flag Beach

Phinikoudes Beach (Larnaca)

Bordering Larnaca's central coastal promenade, Phinikoudes Beach is one of the most famous in Cyprus. “Phinikoudes” means small palm trees (now grown into very big palm trees) that were planted in 1922.

The beach has fine grey sand and is some 500 metres long. The width varies from 30 metres to 100 metres.

The area is popular for its cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels. There are also a large number of mini markets close to the beach. The commercial and shopping centre of the town is just behind the promenade. The main road, Athenon Avenue, is planted with palm trees, green areas and colourful flowers that add to the magnificent scenery.

The beach has several services and facilities such as toilets, showers, changing rooms, access for the disabled, sun beds and umbrellas and water sports. Lifeguards are on duty with lifesaving equipment during the bathing season.

There is easy and safe access to the beach by bus and car or on foot. Many car parks are found near the beach.

The sea is clean and the water quality in line with standards set by the European Union’s Bathing Water Directive. The sea is usually calm and the waves mild.

Every year, for two weeks in June the Larnaca Kataklysmos Fair takes place. During the Fair the blue flag is withdrawn.

Blue Flag Beach

Mckenzie  Beach (Larnaca)

Located in Larnaca municipality  just along the coast from the fishing shelter of Larnaca, near the end of Larnaca airport  you will find many coffee shops, restaurants, tavernas and small hotels, all close to or on the beach, which is well known for its beautiful white sand and refreshing waters and is particularly popular with Cypriots from Larnaca and Nicosia

Here you can enjoy many water sports facilities, which include wind surfing and scuba diving.

In summer the beach is very busy and full of activity.

In winter, especially on sunny days, many people come here to take a walk along the sandy beach and have lunch in the restaurants at the seashore.

Less than a five minute drive from Larnaca airport, Mackenzie Beach offers a great choice of restaurants famous for their Cyprus cuisine and fresh fish.

You can get to the beach by bus, car, motorbike, bicycle or on foot.

Ladies Mile Beach (Limassol)

Nearer 5 miles long than 1, the beautiful Ladies Mile beach is located near the New Limassol Port and is only a 10-15 minute drive from Limassol town centre- it is reached  by taking the Phasouri/Akrotiri road close to the new port of Limassol and whilst still in the built up area turning left at the signpost indicating the route to the beach.

You can walk along the golden sandy beach, swim in the crystal calm waters or even have a go on the water sports facilities. The water is shallow and very clear, so it’s safe for kids. The sand runs for miles so if you’d prefer some peace and quiet you will be sure to find it here.

Ladies Mile beach is one of the most popular windsurfing spots on the island due to its flat shallow water.

Curium Beach (Limassol)

About 16 km west of Limassol can be found one of the most appealing beaches on the island, Curium is a beach of unspeakable beauty. The sea is rough and wild, whereas the beaches are largely pebble giving way to sand where it steepens at the waterline.

A section of the sea i marked by buoys and is dangerous for bathers at all times.

Dotted along the beach are a number of cafés offering food and drink.

This quiet and extensive beach is at the foot of high cliffs on which the famous ancient Roman settlement and Curium Amphitheatre on which have been excavated and rebuilt.

The panoramic views east and west along the coastline and down onto the beach are quite spectacular.

The cliffs are a popular launch point for hand-gliders who can often be spotted riding above the Curium cliffs.

The beach is also a popular sailing spot but can get overcrowded with swimmers.

Governors Beach (Limassol)

Off the main Nicosia/Limassol highway 29 km east of Limassol, this excellent beach is close to Cape Dolos.

Travelers from Limassol should watch for the beach signpost approx 3 km beyond the right turning to Ayios Yeoryios Monastry.

From Larnaca direction, visitors will see the sign approx 2.5 km after the turning for Mari.

There are several small sandy bays with taverns, holiday homes and private residences extending along the top of dazzling white cliffs, one of a number of the popular taverns is actually at beach level with its lawn just about reaching the water's edge.

The beach itself offers moderately shelving dark grey sand mixed with shingle at the waterline

which in high summer can become really feet burning hot!

Shallow, calm water with various amenities make it ideal for families with young children as well as couples wishing to escape.

There is also an area of amazing white rocks, perfect for those who like to dive, snorkel, boat or fish.

Nearby nature trails make for enjoyable leisurely walks along the gentle paths wondering around tropical vegetation admiring the scenery.

Unfortunately the fine scenery is not helped by Vasilikos cement works and other development across the bay.

Popular during the summer week-ends the beach is quiet at other times.

Blue Flag Beach
Coral Bay
(Paphos)

Coral Bay is located in the Pegeia Municipality of Paphos and rated the best beach in western Cyprus as well as being only a short drive away from Paphos it is less then an hour from the airport.

The beach is reached by driving through banana plantations and beautiful vineyards.

This popular spot is 8 miles from Paphos, on the road to Pevia,  these western shores  sweep their way with rugged grandeur to Cape Arnauti.

A backcloth of high ground. with its fair weather cloud formations, adds to the fine setting and the local people. well aware of its attractions, congregate at the beach on summer week-ends.

Retirement homes of British residents are scattered on the tops of the white cliffs that encompass the hay and its gently shelving sands.

The beach has a lovely long curved stretch of golden sand that falls in between two headlands, it  is well-equipped and has calm shallow waters all around, pedaloes and canoes can be hired, cafes and taverns specialising in local dishes, cater for the needs of visitors.

The bay also has some splendid little coves in the region and many a place to explore. Not only that, the bay offers the chance for some outstanding diving, and is also very close to the nesting spot for the turtles of the island.

Lara Bay (Akamas peninsula,  Paphos district)
Lara bay can be found on one of the last remaining wilderness areas in Cyprus - the Akamas peninsula, the beach is off the beaten track and not the easiest to reach by standard car due to the many unpaved roads around this beach but can be got to by 4 wheel drives or it makes an excellent hiking opportunity and is without a doubt worth making the effort to see.

Once you reach the beach you will soon realise how wonderful an area it is with miles of
soft sand and rock, providing a superb alternative to the more crowded beaches to be found on the island and is a superb opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and be at one with nature.

There is an open air restaurant adjacent to the beach which is certainly is well worth a visit.

Proposed as a National Park, the Akamas has a wild and rugged beauty unlike anything else on the island.

Famous for its conservation society in the area you will see many beautiful variants of fauna and flora.

However, the most famous residents are the Green Turtle and Loggerhead Turtle,  one of the few places in the Mediterranean where this turtle returns to breed

Part of the beach is protected just for this very reason and you can volunteer to help with the Lara Beach Turtle Station whilst you are visiting and see these protected specimens for yourselves.

Best time to visit is in spring and autumn as the beach is restricted in high summer as the turtles are nesting.

If you visit the area in July/August, you cannot access the beach, so try driving a little further past Lara bay towards the tip of the peninsula - there are many rocky coves that are completely deserted and just waiting to be discovered.

Chrysochous Bay  (Akamas, Paphos district)

Approx 35 km north from Pafos is Chrysochous Bay stretching from Cape Akamas to Pomos Point.

Characteristic of this coastline are crystal clear waters set against a backdrop of rugged mountains, lush, green vegetation and  gloriously sandy beaches mixed together with some pebbly stretches.

Off shore the waters are of a glassy mosaic of greens and blues that promise some of the best snorkelling and diving on the island.

This is really one long beach stretching from the edge of the Akamas on the Polis/Latchi side to Pomos further around the bay.

It is not at all difficult to find a deserted section between Polis and Pomos where you can lay back relax and enjoy your own "private" section of beach.
