Question:

I am in the process of buying a house in Cyprus and will be moving out there this year. Have you any suggestions as to where to look when buying a car, buying from a dealer or buying privately, which is the best?

Answer:

Next to buying a home, buying a car is in all probability the greatest purchases you'll make and should be a pleasant experience. When evaluating where to purchase your car, think of what you are looking for in a vehicle and what kind of risk you're comfortable with before choosing where to buy.

There are a lot of cars for sale privately and can be sourced through internet internet sites - newspaper classifieds - word of mouth (locals, expat grapevines and of course that nice man sitting at the bar). The rule of caveat emptor, or ‘buyer beware’, operates.

When buying from a private individual there is inevitably less legal protection than buying from an established, authorised and licensed new and used car dealership.

The risks of buying through a private individual are: - You may be dealing with a "curb stoner." (A person who buys and sells cars on the street or “at the curb” without a license for a profit) You have no recourse if you buy a bad car (other than to sue through the courts and that, may even be your new best friend expat).

You're stuck, in most cases, if you find the milometer has been fiddled with - You'll run the risk of loosing the car and your investment, if the car you purchase later turns out as having been stolen, still subject to an hire purchase agreement, or no longer qualifies for duty free status, whether the seller was involved in the crime or not.

Buying a (Nearly) new low mileage car from a well established new and used car dealership in Cyprus could easily prove to be the most low risk option.

Established new and used car dealerships appreciate new customers and a good dealerships will not only provide a courtesy car until they have taken care of all the necessary registration documentation to get you on the road - many will even offer a guaranteed buy-back facility.

Anyone thinking about a move to Cyprus within the next 12 months should start researching new and used car prices ect. now! As well as developing a feel for the market and building up a relationship with a dealership you will discover what services they offer and "what they can do for you"

Tips:

It is advisable to purchase new or used cars through an established and reputable dealership - this way you will benefit from the dealerships customer relationship programme as well as being protected under the consumer protection sale of goods Act.

It's not really a good idea to buy a car from a private source, or from an unregistered car dealer as the only course of action open would be to sue the seller through the courts should anything go wrong.

It really is all a matter of which you prefer, but the above tips & reflections will hopefully give you a better idea of which way to go when looking for your new or used car.
