Just visiting the island for a holiday or, thinking about "Starting a New Life in Cyprus"?

Question:

"Now we are retired, we have the time to take more holidays overseas and fixing up a travel insurance policy has become something of a problem, our normal insurance company won't cover us now because of our age, we have tried some other companies but the premiums are so expensive. Can you help?

Answer:

As you get older and especially for retired travellers, insurance companies either decline cover or step-up their premiums if you are over 60 and looking to buy travel insurance. Despite the increasing number of older travellers heading for sunny climes, it can sometimes be a bit of a struggle for over 70’s to get affordable travel insurance. The good news is that there are a number of specialist companies quoting for older travellers, some stop at 79 whilst others have no upper limit.

Sometimes your travel agent or tour operator might tell you that you have to buy their travel insurance in order to buy a holiday from them, perhaps as part of an inclusive deal. Only take this if the total cost is rewarding, compared to buying the holiday and travel insurance separately. In most cases you will in all likelihood find that you are paying over the odds for the travel insurance, even if it is in some sort of "special deal". Profit margins on holidays are very tight nowadays and tour operators often make most profit from selling overpriced "extras" such as travel insurance.

Tips:

It is not advisable to buy your travel insurance from the individual travel provider, meaning don't buy your travel insurance from the travel agent or tour operator from who you buy your holiday/trip. Why? If that company goes out of business, chances are, so does their insurance (which at the best, could get very, very messy).

It's a good idea to book your travel insurance at the latest directly after booking your holiday or flight, so you'll be covered for cancellation. Make sure you know the insurer's conditions for cancellation though.

While it may be tempting, it's really not a good idea to rely on a European Health Insurance Card to provide cover on your travels, you still need sufficient travel insurance to cover all your healthcare costs as well as Cancellation / Delay, Lost / delay of Baggage, Loss of Personal Effects, Flight accidents, repatriation back to your home country by whatever means are deemed appropriate (air ambulance, airline etc.) and so forth in the case of a medical emergency.
